Anonymous asked: oh god.. did you have a tonsilectemy?? did it suck?? Im getting one in less than a month.

I’m going to be honest with you and say that yes, it sucked. I was the absolute “nightmare case” post-op, so anything wild that happened to me is incredibly unlikely to happen to you.

My best advice is as follows:

Drink as much water as possible, all the time, even though it hurts to swallow. A dry throat hurts far more than a hydrated one. I had a big jug (almost 2 litres) and drank two per 24 hours. If I woke up during the night I sipped a bit of water, and it worked pretty well.

Stay on top of pain by not missing any meds, setting alarms and waking up to take them during the night. I missed my pain meds once and found it tricky to catch up and stay on top of it again. A meds chart really helps (just Google to find one and print it off).

For ice-cream, it can sometimes make your throat feel cloggy so wait until around day 3 to eat it. Jelly is amazing, you will get sick of it but it is amazing because it’s easy to eat. Miso soup will be something you can actually taste, so have lots. And overcooked pasta with lots of butter = the greatest thing ever. If you can’t eat, suck ice. That also helps with pain. I ate an entire jumbo bag of ice over one week.

It gets worse before it gets better. Day 5 or 6 the pain gets worse. Sleep it off as much as you can. Just hold on and wait for around day 10 after surgery, it’s what we call the ‘magic day’ where you wake up and feel pretty good.

All the best to you, stranger c:
